His flute playing pairs technical range with a subtle, expressive touch, opening up musical possibilities rarely heard on the instrument. His rhythmically distinctive DADGAD guitar is central to his longstanding touring partnership with Shetland fiddler Ross Couper, while his solo shows, The Hearth and Forge, bring both instruments into his work as a composer and storyteller. Rooted in traditional music, his work moves between acoustic performance, contemporary composition and experimental sound. On guitar, he combines melodic fluency with driving dance grooves, jazz swing and intricate, bouzouki-like counter-harmonies, using effects to extend the instrument’s range of textures. His collaborations include the Auvo Quartet and OBT, alongside projects spanning Scandinavian traditions, Indian music, Moroccan Gnawa and orchestral performance. His solo work combines original and traditional music with stories, archive recordings and sampling. Following his award-shortlisted debut The Hearth, Forge expands his musical and theatrical ambition, exploring family, displacement and belonging. It earned glowing four-star reviews praising his extraordinary musicianship and was selected for Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of the Fringe. A 2019 Scots Trad Music Awards Musician of the Year nominee, Tom also works as a producer and sound designer, with credits at the Tron, Traverse and Assembly and a Prague Fringe award for Can This Be Home. His teaching experience includes the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Trinity Laban in London, Newcastle University and the University of the Highlands and Islands. https://www.tomoakesmusic.com/contact daily 0.75 2023-04-24 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60ae6d465ca5f64bab82e6c4/1635605478062-Q5RB3OPXPHK48UV3VATH/Tom+Oaks+2021-14.jpg Contact -
